ITI WELCOMES APPLICATIONS FROM THEATRE ACTORS TO PARTICIPATE IN PRIME 2017

12 Apr 2017

Irish Theatre Institute welcomes applications from theatre actors to participate in prime, ITI’s free continuing professional development programme in association with Age & Opportunity / Bealtaine Festival.

Now in its 3rd year, prime 2017 offers professional actors an opportunity to re-ignite their creative dynamism, develop their ideas and build their skills in writing for theatre across four days of intensive workshops from May to August. Participants with a strong idea, or an existing draft of a script, and with experience of writing for theatre, will work with dramaturg Hanna Slättne to assess their practice and learn valuable insights into the dramaturgical process. By the end of the programme, participants will have gained valuable knowledge, practical experience and confidence in creating their own work.

WORKSHOP #1: IDEAS, STORY & STRUCTURE | MAY 19th

A day-long intensive workshop on the exploration of ideas, stories and structure led by Dramaturg Hanna Slättne. This session will include an introduction to dramaturgy and how it can assist you in writing that play that’s waiting to be written. Individual feedback sessions with each participant will be scheduled directly with Hanna between workshop # 1 and #2. Participants will work towards drafting their own script for submission and feedback.

WORKSHOP #2: DRAFTING TO REDRAFT – EXPLORING THE SCRIPT | JULY 14th

A day long workshop on redrafting your script where each participant will engage in a one-to-one feedback session on their individual scripts.

WORKSHOPS #3 & #4: ON THE FLOOR – PUTTING LEARNING INTO PRACTICE | AUGUST 26 & 27th

Two full days of workshopping together on the floor. Working as a group and consolidating the learning points from the programme, explore your scripts in this practical weekend of feedback and discussion. These sessions will identify practical opportunities around supporting each other in writing into the future.

The prime programme is subsidised by Irish Theatre Institute via Age & Opportunity/Bealtaine Festival and the Arts Council, and will be provided free of charge to those professional theatre actors who meet the criteria as set out below. The workshops will take place in Dublin City Centre.

Hanna Slättne is the Director of New Work Development at Tinderbox Theatre Company where she runs the dramaturgy strand of the company’s activities: working with writers under commission, production dramaturgy and artist’s development programmes such as TAKE AWAY THEATRE and the STATE OF THE ARTS initiative; a series of dramaturgy led workshops for theatre makers. She works closely with Tinderbox’s participatory programme across their varied range of activities. Hanna has worked with most of the leading Northern Irish theatre companies as part of the Joint Sectoral Dramaturgy Initiative 2005- 2015 and regularly collaborates with the BBC and Northern Ireland Screen providing skills development for writers. Hanna is a founder member of The Dramaturgs’ Network UK and since 2015 is working with Pamela McQueen to launch the Dramaturgs’ Network Ireland. In 2016 Hanna won the Kenneth Tynan Award for excellence in dramaturgy.  She is the dramaturg on Reassembled Slightly Askew; a sonic arts and new writing, immersive experience which is currently touring.

Prime… was an uplifting experience on so many levels… Through the prime programme I felt – for the first time in years – that I was connected with and involved in the business/profession of performance.                                                                          – prime 2016 participating actor
