NOELLE BROWN BEGINS IRISH THEATRE INSTITUTE OFFSITE RESIDENCY AT COISCÉIM DANCE THEATRE

In the second of a series of summer 2017 residencies, CoisCéim Dance Theatre welcomes ITI alumnus Noelle Brown for a three week Irish Theatre Institute Off Site residency (17th July – 6th August).

During this residency Noelle will work with actor and performance artist Shane Byrne on an exciting new project Waiting [working title], a dance documentary for theatre that exposes the varied reality of lived experiences of gay people in Ireland post marriage referendum. Working together for the first time they hope to develop a piece that will challenge myths around lesbians and gay men’s sexual desires, critique the trauma of “coming out” and deliver a frank account of the ongoing struggle for equality on one’s own terms.

ITI Alumni Off Site @ CoisCéim is a resource-sharing partnership between Irish Theatre Institute and CoisCéim Dance Theatre designed to support and facilitate creative development opportunities for independent artists in Ireland. ITI Off Site is supported by The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

 

Noelle Brown has been an actor since 1987 and has worked extensively in theatre, film, television and radio. She began directing and writing for theatre in 2002. Noelle was shortlisted for the P.J. O’Connor Radio Drama Awards in 2012. Her play Postscript, co-written with Michèle Forbes, and in which Noelle performs, was nominated for the Fishamble New Writing Award and the Bewleys Little Gem Award (Dublin Fringe Festival 2013) and toured nationally and international in 2014/15. Postscript has just completed a run at the Abbey Theatre (Peacock) (June 2017). Creaking co-created with Director Oonagh Murphy and written by Noelle was first presented as a staged reading at Riverbank Arts Centre as part of the First Fortnight Festival (January 2017). The piece toured to venues nationwide as part of Age & Opportunity’s Bealtaine Festival in 05 2017. Noelle’s second play Foxy premiered at Project Arts Centre in October 2015. Noelle is currently writing a play for young people entitled Jigsaw which explores the theme of inter country adoptions. She has been a storyliner for Irish TV soap Fair City. Noelle is an alumnus of Irish Theatre Institute’s Six in the Attic resource-sharing initiative.

 

Shane Daniel Byrne is an actor, performance artist, producer and facilitator. He is 28 and lives and works in Dublin city. He is a founding member of THEATREclub. His work often centres on his own personal experience. He is interested in using his own life to encourage an audience to think about theirs. Read more about Shane’s work to date here.

PRIME DAY 2 AT IRISH THEATRE INSTITUTE, IN ASSOCIATION WITH AGE & OPPORTUNITY/BEALTAINE

WORKSHOP 2: DRAFTING TO REDRAFT – EXPLORING THE SCRIPT

Since meeting for the first time in 05 when they immersed themselves in an intensive workshop on the exploration of ideas, stories and structure led by Dramaturg Hanna Slättne, the five PRIME 2017 participants have continued to make progress on their plays. Playwright is a very new venture for most of these actors; they are all at different stages in their process and are grappling with different aspects of crafting and redrafting their plays. PRIME Day 2 is a day-long exploration of different approaches to redrafting and testing their script and ideas. Under the guidance of dramaturg Hanna Slattne, the group will look at character, structure and make plans for the next draft. In addition each participant will participate in a one-to-one feedback session on their individual scripts with Hanna.

prime, developed by Irish Theatre Institute, in partnership with Age & Opportunity focuses on career sustainability, entrepreneurial skills, physical and mental health and well-being for professional actors. prime 2017 offers professional actors an opportunity to re-ignite their creative dynamism, develop their ideas and build their skills in writing for theatre across four days of intensive workshops from 05 to August.
