Three Show in a Bag alumni: Sonya Kelly (SIAB 2011), Bryan Burroughs (SIAB 2013) and Margaret McAuliffe (SIAB 2016), will share their remarkable artistic journeys with you. From the spark of their initial ideas, to how they turned them into a play, and shaped their work while out on the road. Come ready to listen, share and be inspired. This is a great opportunity for anyone aspiring to the Show in a Bag programme.

Show in a Bag is an artist development initiative of Dublin Fringe Festival, Fishamble: The New Play Company and Irish Theatre Institute to resource theatre makers and actors. 

Sonya Kelly

Sonya Kelly is an Irish writer and actor. Her debut solo play (Show in a Bag 2011), which she wrote and performed, The Wheelchair on My Face: a look back at a myopic childhood, was produced by Fishamble, the new play company and won a Scotsman Fringe First Award for new writing at the Edinburgh Fringe 2012. The show played 150 performances in over fifty venues and toured to New York where it received a Critics’ Pick in the New York Times.

Her second play, which she wrote and performed, How To Keep An Alien, a story about falling in love and proving it to the government, was produced by Rough Magic and won Best Production at the Dublin Fringe, 2014. It toured to over thirty venues in Ireland and internationally to the Brisbane Festival, Traverse in Edinburgh Edinburgh, Paris and the Soho Theatre, London and The Irish Arts Center in New York. It will tour to New Zealand in 2017.

Her short play, The Pet Sitter was commissioned by the Abbey Theatre as part of their Future Tense short play series. Other plays include, Bye Now So and Furniture written with the support of the Arts Council, Project Arts Centre and the Pavilion Theatre bursaries.

Writer’s residencies include, Six In The Attic at the Irish Theatre Institute, Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, Rough Magic, and The National Theatre Studio in London.

 

Bryan Burroughs

 
Bryan trained at the Samuel Beckett Centre at Trinity College Dublin.
Noteworthy performances include My Foot/My Tutor with Articulate Anatomy (Best Male Performance at Dublin Fringe Festival 2004), Barabbas Theatre Company’s Johnny Patterson: The Singing Irish Clown (Irish Times Theatre Award Best Supporting Actor 2009) and Beowulf : The Blockbuster which originated as a Show In A Bag has toured Ireland, Scotland,Wales, France, Australia, New York, and was the number one success of the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 winning the STAGE Award for Acting Excellence.
Other notable productions include Act Without Words 2 by Samuel Beckett for Company SJ which most recently performed at the Barbican in London and the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. He also regularly performs in a two hander adaptation of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol with Aaron Monaghan which returned to The Ark for Christmas 2016.

As director Bryan has directed Fight Night and The Games People Play for RISE productions written by Gavin Kostick which won Best Actor and the Bewleys Little Gem Award at Dublin Fringe 2010 and Best New Play at the Irish Times Theatre Awards 2013 respectively.

As Movement Director recent productions include Druid’s Beauty Queen of Leenane, Fishamble’s Inside The GPO, Yew Tree’s Alone It Stands, Pat Moylan’s Stones In His Pockets, Tarry Flynn at the Lir Academy, Fool For Love at the Abbey and for Second Age Hamlet and Macbeth.

For RTÉ Bryan has appeared on RTE Jr’s The Beo Show teaching drama to young children, written four short stories for the Tell Me A Story series, written and performed a Christmas short story for the Cór Na Nóg Christmas Concert and directed Fight Night for RTÉ’s Radio Drama season.

Bryan also teaches physical theatre at The Lir Academy of Dramatic Art in association with RADA.

Margaret McAuliffe

 
Margaret is an actor and writer based in Dublin, since graduating from the Gaiety in 2010, she has performed in the following: Anna Karenina dir. Wayne Jordan (Abbey Theatre), My English Tongue, My Irish Heart dir. Martin Lynch (Greenshoot Productions), Jezebel dir. Lynne Parker, Digging for Fire dir. Matt Torney (Rough Magic), Clear the Air dir. Ronan Phelan (Underscore_Productions), Broadening dir. Ronan Phelan (Glassdoll Productions), Richard III dir. Valerie O’Connor (Fast & Loose), Deeds of Deceit dir. Matthew Ralli (Speckintime Productions), The King’s Feet dir. Aoife Spillane Hinks (Chalk Talk Productions), Iphigenia in Aulis dir. Andy Hinds (Classic Stage Ireland), Faustus dir. Roger Gregg (Smock Alley Theatre), and The Steward of Christendom dir. Noel McCarthy (T36).

Her first foray into writing was in 2013 when she wrote and produced Uptimes as part of the Collaborations Festival (now, Scene and Heard).

She wrote her first full length play, The Humours of Bandon for Dublin Fringe Festival in 2016. Produced as part of the Show in a Bag initiative, it went on to win the Bewley’s Little Gem award and Margaret was nominated for Best Performer at the Fringe Award closing ceremony.

Fishamble are now producing it for extensive touring in 2017/2018 and it has been published as part of a ‘Show in a Bag’ anthology for Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, along with Noni Stapleton’s Charolais and Sonya Kelly’s The Wheelchair on my Face.

She has just been awarded part of the Pavilion Theatre Patron Donation Artist Bursary for 2017 for her new show which will be in development in the coming months.
