PRIME 2016 Two Day Masterclasses and Industry Engagements

Part two of the prime programme consists of a series of masterclasses, ‘In Conversations with’, discussions and engagements with industry professionals across two days in late November. Focus will be on increasing networks and engaging with a community of peers as well as approaches to working comfortably and safely late into your career.

SATURDAY, 26th November

10am-1pm:

The Mask of Four Temperaments. Masterclass with Raymond Keane

The constitutional types of the Four Temperaments, Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic and Melancholic, manifest in the shape and rhythm of the human being. Connected to the four elements and the medieval ‘four humours’, exploring these extreme approaches to life aiming to increase our flexibility and range of physical and vocal expression.

Raymond Keane is a founding member of Barabbas and has nearly forty years’ experience as clown, actor, teacher, director and maker of theatre.

In Conversation with Tom Hickey

Tom Hickey is one of the leading Irish actors of his generation. He trained with Deirdre O’Connell at the Stanislavski Studio and was a founder member of Dublin Focus Theatre. From the seventies onwards, he has worked extensively at Ireland’s national theatre and created leading roles at the Abbey in the world premieres of significant new Irish drama. He has had a close working relationship with writer and poet Tom MacIntyre for over twenty years, appearing in his one-man play The Gallant John-Joe at the Edinburgh Festival (2002) and in New York (2003). In 2005 Tom was appointed a Director of the Board of the Abbey Theatre; he is also a patron of Irish Theatre Institute. He recently appeared in Mark O’Halloran’s Garage directed by Lenny Abrahamson for Element Films and Gerard Stembridge’s Alarm for Venus Films. Since 2012, Tom has featured regularly as Grandad Joe in Moone Boy and in 2016 he reunited with Tom MacIntyre once again for a national tour of The Gallant John-Joe.

SUNDAY 27th November

Voice Masterclass with Andrea Ainsworth
Sunday’s workshop give you the opportunity to return to the basics of breath and body work and to open up greater flexibility, colour and range in your voice. We will also look at the best way to warm up your voice before performance. We will start with some floor work so please wear loose movement clothes and bring a mat to lie on. The second part of the workshop will focus on text. A selection of texts will be supplied on the day.

Andrea Ainsworth is one of the leading voice specialists in Ireland. She has been the Voice Director of the Abbey Theatre since 1995, working closely with both Irish and international directors on all productions in the Abbey and Peacock. She has taught in drama schools in London and on the professional actor-training programme in the School of Drama, Trinity College Dublin from 1995 until 2008. She has worked with most of the independent theatre companies in Ireland and also coaches actors for film and TV.

In Conversation with Lynne Parker, Jim Culleton, Paula McFetridge and Jen Coppinger

Hear about Directors’ approach to their practice, the experiences, challenges and opportunities of casting older actors.

Lynne Parker is Artistic Director and co-founder of Rough Magic. Many award winning productions include: Don Carlos, The Taming of the Shrew, Improbable Frequency, Copenhagen, Pentecost, Lady Windermere’s Fan, and Digging for Fire – most recently The Train by Arthur Riordan and Bill Whelan. Other work includes productions for the Abbey Theatre, Charabanc, the Almeida, the Traverse, the RSC, the Tron and The Lir Academy. She received the Irish Times Special Tribute Award in 2008 and an Honorary Doctorate by Trinity College Dublin in 2010.

Jim Culleton is the artistic director of Fishamble: The New Play Company. For Fishamble, he has directed productions which have won Olivier, The Stage, Fringe First, Herald Angel, Argus Angel, 1st Irish, Adelaide Fringe and Irish Times Theatre awards, on tour throughout Ireland, UK, Europe, Australia and the US. He has also directed for the Abbey Theatre, and for companies in Ireland, the UK, US and Australia. He most recently directed Bloomsday on Broadway for Symphony Space/IAC in New York and is currently directing Mainstream by Rosaleen McDonagh for Project/Fishamble.

Paula McFertridge has been Artistic Director of Kabosh since August 2006. Paula was the recipient of the Belfast Ambassador Award 2014 for her work in using the arts to tackle difficult social issues, and the NITB NI Hero Award 2012 for her work in cultural tourism. Prior to Kabosh her many award-winning credits include: Artistic Director Lyric Theatre 2001-2006 and Artistic Director of convictions, produced at Crumlin Road Courthouse by Tinderbox Theatre Company (winner ‘Best Production’ 2000 at the Irish Times/ESB Awards).

Jen Coppinger works as Producer for HotForTheatre, TheEmergencyRoom, United Fall as well as with independent artists such as Kevin Barry, Paul Curley, Kellie Hughes, Seán Mac Erlaine, Gina Moxley, Jody O’Neill, Shane O’Reilly, Raymond Scannell and Dylan Tighe. She has toured work extensively in Ireland and internationally. She has worked on partnerships, commissions and co-productions with Cusack Projects Limited, Dublin Dance Festival, Dublin Theatre Festival, Galway International Arts Festival, International Literature Festival Dublin, The Irish Traveller Movement and Poetry Ireland. She is the Manager of Rough Magic SEEDS and an Artist Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London.
